So let’s get this out of the way right off. You need to think about your own safety and the safety of those around you anytime you choose to go hiking. The best way to be safe is to prepare!
Always let someone know where you are going and what time to expect your return. If you are going alone, send a quick text or give a quick call with the information. If you are going with friends or family make sure someone outside your group gets this information. As long as you are in a group, you don’t need a contact for every member.
Many trails have trail registers. Quickly jot the information in the trail register. These registers are used for emergencies, but more often just for data on trail use. Signing in will help agencies to know where to concentrate trail maintenance and other services.
For short walks off-road it is not necessary to overthink your gear. It is always good, even on a 1/2 mile hike in a busy area, to have a water bottle in hand and appropriate hiking clothing.
